Who We Are
Ben Lorica, Ph.D.Ben is currently the Chief Data Scientist at O'Reilly Media, Inc. and Strata's Director of Content Strategy. He has applied Business Intelligence, Data Mining and Statistical Analysis in a variety of domains including Financial Engineering, Direct Marketing, Consumer and Market Research, Targeted Advertising, Search Marketing, Web Analytics, and Text Mining. His background includes stints with an investment management company, internet startups, and financial services. At O'Reilly, Ben works on custom research and consulting projects, involving all aspects of data intelligence: data acquisition, data transformation and management, analytics, and visualization. He is also an advisor to a few exciting startups and organizations: Databricks, Tacyhon Nexus, SparkBeyond, ClearCutAnalytics, Anodot, Graphistry, the ASI, Yakit, and The Center for Data Intensive Science (University of Chicago).
An ex-academic, Ben was an Assistant Professor at U.C. Davis and was the founding Department Chair for Statistics and Mathematics at C.S.U. Monterey Bay. He has been a visiting member of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley and has taught at U.C. Santa Barbara and the University of the Philippines.
